The Colorado Springs Switchbacks' 2024 season started disastrously, losing five straight games and getting outscored 9-1. It looked like a lost year — until it wasn't. Seven months later, they hoisted the USL Championship trophy at Weidner Field. Now, they're chasing an even tougher goal: becoming the first USL team since 2018 to win back-to-back titles.

Head Coach James Chambers wants to leave last year's rollercoaster behind. He's calling 2025 a clean slate, acknowledging the team has a new roster, new challenges, and plenty of unknowns. Still, he believes the resilience forged in last year's brutal start will carry over.

The Turning Point

One game — a 1-1 draw against Indy Eleven — proved to be the Switchbacks' wake-up call. For the first time that season, the team showed defensive grit. Sporting Director Stephen Hogan remembers that as the moment things shifted.

After a tough week of intense, "ferocious" training, the Switchbacks carried their renewed determination into a 2-0 road win against Oakland Roots. That victory ignited a seven-game unbeaten streak, setting the tone for the rest of the season.

By year's end, they weren't just survivors — they were champions.

A New Year, A New Squad

The 2025 roster looks different, with eight new players joining the team. But Chambers isn't overhauling the game plan — he's refining it.

The goal?

  • Sharper attacks in the final third — they left too many goals unscored last season.
  • Strong defense — the backbone of their 2024 turnaround — must remain intact.
  • Balanced play — offensive creativity without sacrificing clean sheets.

"We're evolving, not rebuilding," Chambers explains.

The Grind of a 34-Game Season

The USL season is a marathon broken into three parts:

  1. Fast start — Building momentum early.
  2. Summer grind — Surviving the heat and fatigue.
  3. Playoff push — Finishing strong when it counts.

Chambers says the key is emerging from summer still in playoff contention — because that's when "the top players show up."

Last year, the Switchbacks surged late, going 5-2-2 in their final nine games. That late push vaulted them up the standings on the final day, securing a crucial home playoff game.

This season, they'll play six of their last nine games at Weidner Field — a venue where they've gone 29-12-10 over the past three seasons.

Home Field and Fan Power

Altitude is an advantage in Colorado Springs — but it's not the only one.

The Switchbacks' passionate fan group, the Trailheads, brings an energy that Chambers calls "infectious." He credits them with making Weidner Field one of the toughest venues in the league.

Hogan says the team's aggressive pressing style also rattles opponents — especially when the crowd fuels the players' belief.

"Sometimes you think you can handle the press," Hogan says. "And then the press happens."

As defending champs, Hogan knows they'll have a target on their backs. Every opponent will give them their best shot. The question is whether the Switchbacks can turn that pressure into motivation.

New Leadership at the Top

Big changes came off the field too. Weidner Apartment Homes, a minority partner since 2020, assumed full ownership, buying out the founding Ragain family's shares.

The Switchbacks also brought in a new president: Brad Estes, former president of Louisville City FC. Estes knows what it takes to repeat as champions — he helped lead Louisville to back-to-back USL titles in 2017 and 2018, the last team to do it.

Estes praised the Ragain family's legacy and vowed to build on it, focusing on culture, collaboration, and community.

The Title Defense Begins

The Switchbacks' 2025 journey starts March 15 at home against Detroit City FC — a night celebrating their championship. From there, it's all about proving they can do it again.

With a rich history of tuberculosis and the Gold Rush, these areas are filled with eerie energy and lurking spirits, making them prime locations for paranormal encounters.

  • Evergreen Cemetery - Established before Colorado Springs was officially founded in 1871, Evergreen Cemetery dates back to the 1860s. While the cemetery itself may have had a haunted reputation, the real eerie encounters happen in the small Chapel built in 1910 for casket storage and services. Over time, the Chapel fell into despair, and the cemetery workers in the basement reported seeing dark figures. Will Deboer Jr., the cemetery manager since 1992, worked to secure funds for the building's restoration and to have it listed on the National Register of Historic Places. During a tour for the designation, a representative experienced a chilling force pass through her body and quickly left. The cemetery was even featured on the Biography Channel's My Ghost Story.

  • North Cheyenne Canyon - According to Native American lore, the Indian God Manitou hurled the devil into the canyon, where the "Devil's Horns" rock formation now stands. The area is also steeped in local legends, including stories of a cheating gambler being thrown into the canyon and the discovery of remains from the 1800s, suggesting it was once a dumping ground for outlaws and undesirables.

  • Gold Camp Road/Tunnels - A favorite summer night hangout for teens, Gold Camp Road is surrounded by eerie legends. Built in the 1800s, the tunnels are said to have claimed the lives of several workers. There are also rumor of a tragic school bus accident. Today, many brave drivers park in the second tunnel, turn off their lights, and wait for their car to mysteriously move. Some have reported seeing ghostly figures in cloaks. While the third tunnel is closed to vehicles, a short hike offers a glimpse into this haunted site.

  • Red Mountain - Located in Manitou Springs at over 7,300 feet, Red Mountain is tied to the tragic tale of Emma Crawford. Seeking a cure for tuberculosis, Emma traveled to the healing springs but passed away at 19. Her dying wish was to be buried atop Red Mountain, and her fiance, along with 11 men, fulfilled her request. Years later, a storms and erosion washed her remains down the mountain, sparking legends that Emma still haunts the area. Visitors can hike to the site of her grave, and an unmarked grave in Manitou Springs Cemetery commemorates her. Every October, the town honors Emma with the famous coffin races down Manitou Avenue.

  • Briarhurst Manor Estate - Built in 1874, Briarhurst Manor was once the summer home of Dr. Bell and his family during the tuberculosis epidemic in Manitou Springs. After serving as a private residence until 1922, it was later transformed into a fine dining restaurant. Known for its intense paranormal activity, the estate was even featured in a 2009 episode of Ghost Hunters. Visitors are encouraged to bring cameras and share any unusual findings from this historic, and reportedly haunted inn.

  • Cave of the Winds Mountain Park - A popular attraction since 1881, Cave of the Winds in Williams Canyon has deep roots in Native American lore. The Jicarilla Apaches believed the cave housed the Great Spirit of the Wind, warning that its twisting winds could warp both body and mind. Only the bravest tribe members dared to enter the cave's entrance chamber. With the reopening of the Manitou Grand Caverns for lantern tours, numerous visitors and staff have reported eerie occurrences. Featured in a 2012 episode of My Ghost Story, paranormal teams have been called in to investigate the mysterious happenings.

  • Edelweiss: Founded in 1967, Edelweiss offers a dining experience that transports you to a timeless restaurant in a historic German city. The menu features a blend of traditional and modern dishes from Germany and other European countries. Run by the muti-generational Schnakenberg family, Edelweiss also boasts the largest selection of German beers in town, which can be enjoyed in their Biergarten or the Ratskeller. Interestingly, the Ratskeller was built using stone from the Cheyenne Canyon and forms of the building's foundation. Visit Thursday through Sunday evenings to enjoy traditional Bavarian music performed throughout the restaurant.

  • Roman Villa's: Opened in 1959, this modest restaurant on North Nevada Avenue has been a family affair for four generations of the Biondi Family, with the women leading the way. He rests outside of the Pikes Peak Center on Cascade Avenue, perched on a wall that children of all ages can easily approach. Created by award-winning Minneapolis artist Kimber Fiebiger, he sports a metallic green shirt, blue metallic striped pants, a dapper bow tie, stylish belt, and black loafers adorned with buckles. Originally part of the Arts on the Streets program, H.D. initially positioned on a rock at the Bijou and Tejon streets intersection. Community Ventures purchased him in 2004 and generously donated him to the City of Colorado Springs.

Kimber Fiebiger has been creating these whimsical statues for about 40 years. It all started when her 2-year old son requested a tiny metal egg sculpture. Since then, her creations have grown in number and popularity, with 21 Humpty Dumpties now in the downtown area, including three new additions; Robin's Egg, Eggsplorer, and Free Range Egg. Her process is labor-intensive, involving sculpting in Styrofoam, adding clay, making a wax print, and casting in metal. Each Humpty Dumpty is unique, featuring two arms, two legs, and a face.



Locals often use the Humpty Dumpty statues as reference points to navigate downtown Colorado Springs. Top race car drivers are here for the Pikes Peak Hill Climb, a 100+ year tradition. Although Race Day tickets are sold out, you can live stream the event on Sunday and watch practice runs June 18-21. Don't miss Fan Fest on Friday night, June 21, from 5-9PM, featuring driver meet-and-greets, race car closeups, a beer garden, and an FMX Freestyle Motocross Demo.

History
The Broadmoor Pikes Peak International Hill Climb (PPIHC), sponsored by Gran Turismo, is also known as "The Race to the Clouds." This invitational automobile hill climb takes competitors to the summit of Pikes Peak, America's Mountain. Established in 1916 by Spencer Penrose, who also founded the Broadmoor Hotel, Pikes Peak Highway, and El Pomar Foundation, the PPIHC covers a 12.42 mile public toll road with 156 turns. Participants ascend 4,720 feet from the 9,390 foot start line at Mile 7 on the Pikes Peak Highway to the 14,115 foot finish line at the summit. As drivers ascend toward the summit, the thin air slows reflexes and drains both mental and muscle strength, while also reducing the power of internal combustion engines by up to 30% compared to their performance at the start line. Competitors and their vehicles must be in peak condition just to finish the race, let alone win. This self-sanctioned race is the most diverse one-day motor sport events in the world.



Tuesday, June 18 - Friday, June 21 - Practice Runs
Race Day tickets are sold out, however, practice run tickets are still available for purchase. These tickets can be purchased online in limited quantities for $75 per day. Each Practice Day you attend requires a separate ticket, and all spectators must sign a liability waiver at the Gateway. Gates open at 4AM and close at 4:45AM with no exceptions. The start line, located 7 miles up the Pikes Peak Highway, closes to uphill traffic at 4:45AM. Spectators must watch practice sessions from designated areas (start line, Glen Cove, Devil's Playground) and cannot move along the course once practice starts. Practice Day attendees will only see cars assigned to practice on a specific section each day. Friday's practice session is optional for competitors and has no qualifying. Friday, June 21 - Fan Fest 
Presented by Toyo Tires, is one of Colorado Springs' largest and most popular street festivals, attracting over 35,000 people to Downtown Colorado Springs the Friday before Race Day. From 5PM to 9PM, meet drivers, visit top sponsors, and enjoy high-flying stunts during the FMX Show. This 10-block street party takes place rain or shine, with no alternate dates due to weather.



Sunday, June 23 - Race Day
At 2:30AM, the Gateway opens to the public with pre-purchased tickets, allowing entry through any of the 3 gates available. at 5:30AM, the start line closes to the public, and no spectator vehicles are allowed above the official PPIHC start line, approximately 7 miles uphill from the Gateway. Merchandise sales begin at 6AM at the start line, Halfway Picnic Grounds, and Devils Playground. Opening ceremonies start at 6:30AM, followed by the green flag at 7:30AM for the start of the 102nd running. The event is expected to end around 5PM, followed by the Parade of Champions.   • The first Air Force Academy graduation occurred on June 13, 1959, at Arnold Hall Theater. With only 207 graduates, the Class of 1959 remains the smallest in Academy history.

  • Class of 1960 was the first class to graduate outdoors, on the Cadet Parade Field (later renamed Stillman Field in 1994).

  • The Class of 1962 was the first to have a commencement address delivered by a U.S. vice president, Lyon Johnson.

  • The first graduation at Falcon Stadium was held on June 5, 1963. Every subsequent graduation has taken place there.

  • In 1963, President John F. Kennedy became the first U.S. president to speak at an Air Force Academy graduation. The limousine he traveled in during his visit to the Academy was the same vehicle he used months later when he was tragically assassinated in Dallas.

  • In 1980, the Air Force Academy witnessed a historic moment as the first class with women graduated.

As the saying goes, it's just enough to freshen things up and rinse away the dust before the sun reappears to dry it all off again.

July

  • July marks the peak of summer, with temperatures ranging from 70 to 95 degrees. Remember to pack shorts, swimsuits, and t-shirts, but don't forget a light jacket or sweatshirt just in case. Colorado has a knack for surprises.

  • August typically sees the highest temperatures of the summer, occasionally reaching 100 degrees. For those accustomed to hot and humid climates, it's worth noting that our low humidity makes even high temperatures feel more bearable.   • Daytime temperatures may still reach the mid-60s, although such highs become less common as the season progresses. Snow remains relatively scarce, and any that falls is likely to melt during the warmer daytime temperatures. Expect more frequent temperatures in the 40s and 50s.

This variability in weather adds to the charm of living here and is just one of the numerous reasons why so many of us adore this place!

  • Dreaming of a white Christmas? We're right there with you. While snow becomes increasingly probable in December, it's not exactly a commonplace occurrence. Days with temperatures in the 60s are not unheard of, but it's more likely to hover in the range of the 30s to 50s.

  • Winter is stepping up its game. While we still experience some days in the 50s, it's becoming more common to see temperatures ranging from the 20s to the 40s.

  • This month typically takes the cake for the highest number of consecutive overcast days, often coinciding with the coldest days of the year. Personally, I've experienced up to three days in a row without seeing the sun, so if you happen to visit on a cloudy day, just be patient; the sun may peek out soon. Anticipate temperatures ranging from the 20s to the 40s.

Since 1937, this legendary rodeo has captivated audiences. The Rodeo's enduring legacy in this area was further cemented three decades ago when the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association established their National Headquarters and Hall of Fame in Colorado Springs.

The lineup of events for the 2024 Pikes Peak or Bust Rodeo includes bareback riding, breakaway roping, steer wrestling, team roping, saddle bronc riding, tie-down roping, barrel racing, and bull riding. With over 200 top-notch competitors, this year's event at the Norris Penrose Event Center promises heart-pounding excitement. Evening performances run from Tuesday through Saturday, starting at 7pm, while matinee shows take place at noon on Friday and Saturday. There's plenty to enjoy before the Rodeo kicks off, as the grounds open at 4pm for evening performances and at 10am for matinees.
